Services and Rates
Like writing, editing does not proceed at a fixed pace. Because of this, it is difficult to establish a fixed price that will be fair in every context. Copyediting an already well written page should not be charged at the same rate as a page that requires heavy revision. Because of this, my fees are typically based on an hourly rate rather than on a per-page basis.
To receive a free estimate for a large work, send me an excerpt to examine. This should be approximately 10-20 pages taken from the middle of the work. Based on an assessment of the level of editing needed, my current workload, and a discussion of your expectations, I will provide an hourly rate, a guaranteed number of pages that I will complete per week, and the maximum number of billable hours per week. If I reach the weekly limit of billable hours without completing the guaranteed page count, I will complete the remaining guaranteed pages for free.
If requested, documents of less than 25 pages may be billed at the per-page rate. Documents of less than 10 pages are always billed at the per-page rate.
Clients with regular editing needs can set up an account to simplify billing. With an account, you simply email your documents to me as needed and receive an invoice at the end of the month.
Nonprofits and students are eligible for a 20% discount.
Glaucon Editing offers three levels of editing service, depending on the needs of your project.
Level 1: Proofreading
Per Page: $2.00
Typical Pace: 5-10 pages/hour
Proofreading is the most basic service, and includes an examination of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Level 2: Copyediting
Per Page: $3.00
Typical Pace: 3-5 pages/hour
Copyediting includes proofreading, but also addresses the text's clarity and organization. I will indicate unclear passages, awkward phrasing, clichés, and other obstacles to the text's professionalism, flow, and intelligibility.
Level 3: Substantive Editing
Per Page: $4.00
Typical Pace: 1-5 pages/hour
This service is primarily for writers of fiction. It covers copyediting and proofreading, but also includes a separate, detailed commentary on character development, plot, and descriptive technique.
This service is available for writers of nonfiction as well, but is limited to my areas of expertise. If you are interested in this service for nonfiction, please contact me with details about the nature of your project.

Submission Guidelines and Billing
Unless special arrangements are made, the format of each document submitted for editing must follow certain guidelines:
- Compatible with Microsoft Word 2003
- Double spaced
- 1" margins left and right; 1.5" margins top and bottom
- 12-point font
If you are submitting letters, brochures, web pages, or other documents that make these requirements impractical, you can email me the text and I will be happy to make an offer based on its format.
Upon completion of the project, I will provide an invoice. Payment may be made either by check or by credit card using PayPal. Payments by check should be sent to:

Finished Product
Upon completion of the proofreading or copyediting process, I will send you two files as email attachments.
First will be the edited version of your document. All changes will be displayed in a different color, with notes and comments appearing in the margins. Using Word's 'Track Changes' feature, it is simple to accept or reject these changes. This file will have the word 'EDIT' appended to the name of your document in order to distinguish it from your original.
The second document will be a style sheet. This contains my notes on your choices regarding style conventions and spelling, where there is more than one acceptable choice. For example, the word 'advisor' may also be spelled 'adviser.' A style sheet will indicate the decisions of this sort that you have already made, so that you can use the word consistently throughout your manuscript. This file will have the words 'STYLE SHEET' appended to the name of your document.

Sample Edits
If you have a large manuscript (more than 50 pages), I will be happy to edit a five page excerpt for free. This will give you a sense of what I can do to help your project. If you are interested in a sample edit, please contact me.
